listening negotiation

many people underestimate the importance of listening in any situation. listening is an important skill that every person needs to be aware of and good at if they are to succeed in just about anything that they do. many people have often said that there is a difference between listening and hearing and while that little adage may seem trite it is very true. there are a great number of areas and tasks that require a good skill at listening. negotiating a deal, sitting in class, understanding another persons feelings and many more cases require good listening.

we have mentioned that there is a difference between listening and hearing. in fact hearing is but one of the three steps of successful listening. the aspects of understanding and judgment are just as important for successful listening. negotiation and attentive listening in class both require that the listener keep all three steps in mind if the listening is to be successful. if all three steps are followed and then successful listening can be achieved and no information will go lost.

hearing is the first step of successful listening. negotiations around a corporate business table require that one hear everything that is said. hearing essentially means being aware and taking note of what is being said and recalling it. in the example above, if the chairman mentions that the company has three main objectives at the moment and the listener can repeat them then successful hearing has taken place. factors such as noise, distractions and boredom can inhibit successful hearing thereby reducing the success of listening.

understanding is the second step of successful listening. negotiations in the business world like mentioned above require that a person understand what is being said so that they can make the most of it. understanding means that a person takes what they have heard in the first step and then make something of it. essentially when a person is able to take what they have heard and make some sort of conclusion from it then they have successfully understood what has been said.

the final step of successful listening is judging. listening in a negotiation in a business meeting does not only require hearing what is said, understanding what is said and then making sense of what has been said. the chairman has said that the company has three objectives, the person understands that the company needs to achieve three goals for success and now the person asks themselves how the company is going to reach them and if the objectives make sense. with judging the person has finally reached the last step and has succeeded in listening during the meeting.
